Veterans’ Foundation Celebrates £30 Million Grant Milestone, Welcomes New CEO Jane Gurney and COO Stella Atherstone

June 18 2025

The Veterans’ Foundation, one of the UK’s fastest-growing military charities, is pleased to announce the appointment of Jane Gurney (pictured right) as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Stella Atherstone (pictured left) as Chief Operating Officer (COO), as the charity surpasses £30 million in grants awarded to organisations supporting veterans, serving personnel, and their families across the UK.

Since its inception in 2016, the Foundation has provided grants ranging from a few hundred pounds to £200,000, enabling over 500 charities to deliver vital services addressing key challenges such as mental health, homelessness, unemployment, and social isolation within the veteran community. Its funding includes Small Grant Awards, Standard Grant Awards, and Salary Grant Awards, ensuring essential organisations can continue to provide life-changing support.

Peter Mountford, Chair of the Veterans’ Foundation, commented: "Reaching £30 million in grants is a landmark moment for the Veterans’ Foundation. This achievement reflects the generosity of our supporters and the hard work of our dedicated team.

At this exciting time, I am absolutely delighted to welcome Jane and Stella into their new roles. Jane brings an extraordinary record of leadership, innovation, and the ability to scale a charity, and Stella has been a driving force behind our growth. Their combined experience, passion, and vision will take the Foundation to new heights, ensuring we can support even more veterans and their families across the UK."

Jane Gurney joins the Foundation after an outstanding 20-year tenure as CEO of Essex & Herts Air Ambulance. Under her leadership, the charity saw remarkable expansion, enhancing critical services and earning national recognition, including an outstanding Care Quality Commission rating. She now aims to strengthen the Foundation’s ability to serve veterans and their families.

Jane Gurney, CEO of the Veterans’ Foundation, said: “I am excited to join this incredible organisation at such a significant time. Surpassing £30 million in grants is an extraordinary milestone, and I look forward to working alongside Stella and the team to ensure even more veterans receive the support they need.”

Stella Atherstone, having served as interim COO, will continue in the role, focusing on operational strategy and ensuring the Foundation’s long-term sustainability.

Stella Atherstone, COO of the Veterans’ Foundation, added: “The £30 million milestone is just the beginning. We remain committed to strengthening our programmes and ensuring veterans receive the resources they need to thrive in civilian life.”

Under the new leadership, the Foundation will continue to champion key initiatives such as Operation Lifeline, launched earlier this year to tackle PTSD, mental health struggles, and suicide prevention among veterans. The campaign funds essential services, including counselling, 24/7 helplines, therapy groups, support dogs, and community outreach programmes.

The Veterans’ Lottery, the UK’s largest single-charity lottery, remains a key funding stream for the Foundation’s grant programme.

The 2023-2024 impact report highlighted a 29% increase in funds raised, reinforcing strong public support for the charity’s mission.

With Jane Gurney and Stella Atherstone at the helm, the Veterans’ Foundation is positioned for continued success, expanding its reach and impact to support even more veterans in the years to come.
